Overview of Antarctica

Antarctica is the Earth's southernmost continent, governed under the Antarctic Treaty System rather than by any single sovereign state. It has no permanent population and no commercial market.

Context

The Antarctic Treaty, in force since 1961, sets the continent aside for peaceful scientific purposes, prohibits military activity and suspends territorial claims among signatories.

A subsequent protocol prohibits mineral resource activity other than scientific research, making commercial extraction unavailable regardless of what the geology might hold.

Activity is limited to national research stations, scientific programmes, fisheries in surrounding waters under international management, and tightly regulated expedition tourism.

There is no investable commercial market. Mineral activity is prohibited by treaty and there is no company registry or private property regime.
